Common Questions

Everything homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

Straight answers from our WETT-certified crew — no jargon, no scare tactics. If you don't see your question here, call (437) 475-3344.

How often should a chimney be swept?

Wood-burning fireplaces: at least once a year, or after every cord burned. Gas fireplaces: every 2 years plus an annual safety check. NFPA 211 requires an inspection annually regardless of how often you use it.

What's the difference between a sweep and an inspection?

A sweep physically cleans creosote and debris from the flue. An inspection (Level 1, 2, or 3) documents the condition of the liner, damper, crown, and clearances — usually with a camera scan and a written report your insurer will accept.

How much does a chimney sweep cost in Toronto?

A standard single-storey wood-burning sweep starts at $249 plus HST. Multi-storey, steep roofs, heavy creosote, or animal removal add to the price — but every quote is fixed in writing before we begin. No hourly billing.

Do I need a WETT inspection to sell my home?

If your home has a wood-burning fireplace or stove, most Ontario insurers now require a current WETT Level 2 report before they'll bind coverage for the buyer. Booking one during the conditional period prevents deal-breaking surprises.

How do I know if my chimney is dangerous to use?

Stop using it if you see: smoke rolling back into the room, a strong campfire smell in humid weather, black flakes on the damper, visible cracks in the crown, or a whistling draft. Book an inspection before your next fire.

Are you insured and certified?

Yes. Every technician carries current WETT SITE-Basic or SITE-Comprehensive credentials, we're CSIA-affiliated, WSIB-cleared, and carry $5M in liability insurance. Certificates are emailed before your appointment.

Section 02 · Safety

Every unswept chimney is a house fire in slow motion.

Ontario logs more than 3,200 residential fires linked to heating appliances every winter, and the leading cause is not faulty gear — it's creosote. Left alone for a single season, the glaze inside a wood flue can ignite at temperatures your fireplace will happily reach on a cold Sunday night. Toronto Chimney Pros exists to make sure that never happens in your home.

Our field crews carry current WETT SITE-Comprehensive and CSIA credentials, our reports are written and photographed, and every visit is fixed-price. If we find a defect, we tell you what it costs to fix, in writing, on the spot — never a driveway upsell.

Frequently asked.

Straight answers on inspections, sweep cadence, what moves the price, and the guarantees we put in writing.

01

Inspections

WETT · Level 1–3 · Real Estate

Are you WETT-certified inspectors?+

Yes. Our inspectors carry current SITE-Basic and SITE-Comprehensive WETT credentials, plus CSIA certification. Every report is signed, stamped, and accepted by Ontario insurers and real-estate lawyers.

What's included in a Level 2 inspection?+

A full visual and internal camera scan of the flue, damper, smoke chamber, firebox, and crown — plus documentation of clearances to combustibles, cap condition, and structural integrity. You receive a written report with photos within 24 hours.

Do I need an inspection before buying a home?+

Yes. Standard home inspections do not open the flue or scan the liner. A WETT Level 2 catches cracked liners, creosote glazing, and structural defects that can cost $8,000–$18,000 to remediate. Book it during the conditional period.

How long does an inspection take?+

Level 1 runs 45–60 minutes. Level 2 with camera scan runs 90 minutes. We deliver a written PDF report — never a verbal summary.

02

Cleaning frequency

Wood · Gas · Pellet · Oil

How often should I clean my chimney?+

Wood-burning fireplaces: annually, or after every cord of wood burned. Gas fireplaces: every 2 years plus an annual safety check. Pellet stoves: every 6 months during heavy use. Oil furnaces: annually before the heating season.

What if I only use my fireplace a few times a year?+

Even light use deposits creosote and attracts nesting animals in the off-season. NFPA 211 requires an annual inspection regardless of use — creosote from just a handful of fires can ignite at flue temperatures above 250°C.

How do I know it's time to clean?+

Signs include: smoke backing into the room, a strong campfire smell in humid weather, black flakes on the damper, poor draft, or visible creosote thicker than a business card. Book immediately if you see any of these.

Do gas fireplaces really need servicing?+

Yes. Gas units accumulate soot on logs and burners, and vents can be blocked by debris or animals. Unserviced gas fireplaces are the leading cause of carbon-monoxide incidents in Ontario homes.

03

Pricing factors

What changes the quote

What determines the price of a service?+

Four factors: chimney height and access (single vs. multi-storey, roof pitch), fuel type (wood is dirtier than gas), condition on arrival (creosote grade, animal nests, water damage), and any liner or crown work needed. Every quote is itemised and fixed.

Do you charge for the initial quote?+

Written quotes are free within our GTA service area. On-site diagnostic inspections carry a flat fee that is fully credited toward booked work.

Why are some quotes so much lower?+

Low quotes typically exclude camera scanning, safety documentation, liner integrity checks, or WSIB-covered technicians. Uninsured operators shift liability to you. Our quotes include every step required by NFPA 211 and Ontario Building Code.

Do you offer financing?+

Yes. Repairs and rebuilds over $2,500 qualify for 0% financing over 12 months through our lending partner, with soft credit checks that don't affect your score.

04

Warranty & guarantees

Workmanship · Materials · Insurance

Is your work guaranteed?+

Every service carries our 5-year workmanship warranty. Stainless liners are backed by lifetime manufacturer warranties. Rebuilds carry a 10-year structural guarantee on masonry and crown work.

Are you fully insured and WSIB-covered?+

Yes — $5M commercial liability plus WSIB clearance on every technician. Certificates are provided in writing before work begins. Never let an uninsured operator on your roof.

What happens if something goes wrong after the job?+

One call, no charges. Warranty callbacks are dispatched within 48 hours. If the issue is workmanship-related, we cover parts, labour, and any collateral damage — in writing.

Do you guarantee your quotes?+

Fixed-price, in writing, honoured for 30 days. No hourly billing, no surprise upsells on the driveway. If we miss a defect in the initial scope, the fix is on us.
